Fixing my GNOME log in
It was a day before Idul Fitri, I tried to install SuSE 9.3 to replace my not-so-old OS Fedora Core 4 on my PC with motherboard ASUS CUSL-2C and Pentium III 800 Mhz inside. Beside I want to change it, I also already made a word to install it. After I installed Windows 2000 Professional because of the previous one has “NTLDR is missing”, I installed SuSe 9.3. Everything went just fine until don’t-know-what-happened, I can’t log in to my desktop environment GNOME and other desktop environment too, both as a user and root. It has an error message like this on a dialog box with an option to see the .xsession-errors file or not.
Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sesions to see if you can fix this problem.
Oo..Oo.. what happened?! I checked the .xsession-errors file was empty, please make me not to reinstall it since i’ve got litle time to do that due to goodwill to some old-brother’s house for ask and give sorry to each others that can take a whole day to do it (well, it depends on how many old-brothers you’re visiting and it’s distance) on Idul Fitri’s day. Btw, the clock at that time was about ten in the night. Can’t still figured it out until about 11.50 PM, I went to bed. First thing in the next day was to do Sholat Ied at nearest mosque in my neighborhood. Actually after the pray, I want to try fix this problem, but during the condition at that time made me not to. Finally after some goodwill to old-brother’s house, i tried to fix this. This is what I did to get back my dekstop’s log in (I did this on my username home folder):
1. rm -rf .g*
2. rm -rf .xinitrc
3. rm -rf .xsession-errors
4. rm -rf .Xauthority
5. rm -rf .ICEauthority
At another eleven in the night, finally i can made myself log in to my GNOME, both as a user or root as well, though i have to made some modifications on the desktop due to effect of deleting the files .g*, but it’s not a big problem to me.
Btw, in my opinion SuSE 9.3 a litle bit unstable compares to SuSE 8.0 due to most hang on restart and shutdown especially after “Turning off swap” statement and why there is no XFCE by default?!? and sorry for my English.
pake suse sih, suseh deh …
